MLM CLASSROOM 1 - Spam Filters Gone Crazy!
Is Your MLM Email Getting Through?
During December 2003 spam reached an all time high, according to anti-spam technology vendor Brightmail. Over 21 billion of more than 40 billion e-mail messages scanned by Brightmail in the course of providing its service were identified as unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail, the company said in September 2003 release. So we can safely say:
Spam Filters Have Gone Crazy Killing Legal MLM Opt-in Email! <:< Non-Spam Emails
It is being estimated that 30-40% of legitimate MLM emails (including permission opt-ins) are being wiped out by spam filters! As spam has increased and more people get upset - more efforts go into blocking spam. The trouble is that they get the good email too!
The large Internet portals, hosts and carriers are going all out to wipe out spam (including legit MLM mail) because it sucks up server, router and bandwidth costing them money. Don’t tell your aunt Matilda that your are going to “loose weight!” Poof your email just got wiped. Don’t tell her you are going on a “free MLM cruise!”
Innocently saying “call toll free” can bring the hammer down on your business email. And whatever you do don’t tell your customer that “satisfaction is guaranteed!”
When To Send Email & When Most Of It is Opened
Best to Worst Days For Email Wednesday - Best Thursday Tuesday Friday Monday Saturday Sunday - Worst Best message and opening and click through (to your site or ad) is 11 am in the order of days of popularity for email. The best time to send email among professionals is 9 am.

MLM & GENERAL SPAM TRIGGERS
You need to have a list of "spam triggers" to refer to when you write your email. We have researched out some of the common ones for you below. Here are some tips:
| 1. | Stay away from trigger words and phrases that make your message disappear. Don’t use opt-out phrases ("to be removed"... etc.). Its terrible but, the clear opt-out instructions of legitimate businesses are the exact words triggering Spam Filters. |
| 2. | Keep your email short. When you email say, "Your newest information is available to read by following this link (the words “clicking here” trigger some filters). |
| 3. | Be careful in your mailings about specific words, phrases, and opt-out notices. Don't mention free gifts, special offers, 1-800 numbers, toll free, and others below. Use an unusual unsubscribe statement like, “if never want to hear from us again. Don’t use Bizopp, weight loss, or MLM these words are on the list.. Of course the absolute killer is, “This is not a spam email”. |
Header and Subject Line Filter Terms
Extra space in a header/ subject line will get you killed as will slashes, hyphens and other tricks. Here are some common header words that will POOF your email
$$$, 100% free, MLM Business, MLM Opportunity, MLM Freedom, MLM Fortune, ad, Earn $, earn extra cash, explode your business, double your income, eliminate debt, extra income, f r e e, fast cash, financial freedom, financially independent, free gift, free info

MLM CLASSROOM
2 - Successful E-Mail Marketing
1. What is E-mail (Email or email)? Electronic Mail is the sending and receiving of mail from one computer to another in its broadest definition. Normally we think of it as one company or person sending information to another company or person using the Internet. Our focus in this University lesson is to give you the background and tools to successfully market on the Internet using E-mail or Email. It is by far the most successful means of communication and marketing on the Internet.
2. How to get your Email out to customers and friends! Today with the large volume of Email on the Internet we have to be very professional to get results from our email efforts. Spam is angering everybody and one single complaint can get you shut down! Spam filters can kill your email. You not only have to write good ad copy for an ad but you also have to keep from using words that make your email go “poof” and disappear! Naturally words like Viagra or sex or free are good places to start. Don’t use them in the Header (headline area). Here are some other tips for writing email adcopy SO SPAM FILTERS DON’T KILL THE MESSAGE:
| a. | You have 4 points to start with in the email message. |
| b. | The word free is minus 1 point. |
| c. | Home business opportunity is minus 3 points |
| d. | Of course then “Free Home Business Opportunity” goes “poof” and disappears! |
| e. | Other words that hurt are (there are about 200) - chat, join, make money, mlm opportunity, limited time, diet, money, credit card, click, click here, $, remove (because many spammers do a “remove”), and some filters even hate the words subscribing and unsubscribing . |
| f. | A popular way to get around filters for a little bit is to use a Jpeg or Gif file, but filters are penalizing for html code “Href” and “img” used to put them there. |
| g. | Big HTML letters are bad news! Some filters whack away at "ff0000" as good indicator of spam. In fact, "ff0000" (html for bright red) turns out to be as good an indicator of spam as any porno term. |
| h. | Free email addresses are used heavily by Spammers, so you'll want to test their use. They are marked as suspect by some filters. |
3.Test, Test and More Tests
What is the cheapest way to see if your email will carry your important message and still get through the Spam filters? Test! Brightmail is the largest spamfilter company in the U.S. Sign up with a “HotMail” account and send your email messages to yourself as a first test (instructions for signing up at Hotmail are listed in Free - Dump Accounts section. If you are not on AOL find a friend that is and send your test mail to them.
5. Writing the email - Text has to be right:
Keep format simple, and clean. Do not "play" with dollar signs, fancy characters. You need to do a “hard return” after each line. Do not exceed 58-64 characters per line (ideal is 62); word-wrap works differently with each ISP. Strike the "Return Key" twice after each paragraph. Keep your paragraphs short and concise. Keep your paragraphs short and concise. This eliminates zig-zag unfilled horizontal lines that appear with only one or two words on a next line, followed by other irregularly formatted paragraphs. You have to look professional
Below are shareware utility programs that place hard-returns wherever you set the line length (62 characters recommended).
Software
*c) TextPad. (Shareware)
http://www.textpad.com
a) UltraEdit32 (Shareware)
http://www.idmcomp.com
b) BBEdit (Shareware ~ Mac's)
http://web.barebones.com/products/bbedit/bbedit.html
*Recommended
If you choose not to use one of the above software programs when composing E-Mail messages, use a hard carriage return before you get to the end of each line. Again, maximum line length needs to be 62. If you are constantly making changes in your E-Mails before you send them, just type the whole e-mail, make your final edits, then go through and put your hard returns in when you're finished. This is the reason many people often do their E-Mails in a word processor; to count the characters in the status bar as they are typing.
6. E-Mail Tone:
Keep the tone of your E-Mail enthusiastic, friendly, simple and direct. Write with kindness; the way you would a friend. Use smiley faces and happy tones. Why? Email comes across as grim and ugly without them and causes many problems.
7. Emoticons:
Do use Emoticons so your recipient can tell when you're joking, or not upset. Or, use <G>, *grin*, or LOL (Laughing Out Loud) as appropriate. Just don't over-do!! One or two in a business message should be the maximum. Once again this is a new trend to be tested in email marketing.
Examples:
:O) = Smiling Face
;O) = Winking Face
8. CAPS (Yelling):
DON'T YELL. TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED YELLING.
Besides being impolite, because many of the “Nigerian” scam letters used all caps, often this causes a spam filter to take out your email.
9. Excellence:
Proofread and polish, then read again one-more-time. Make sure your communication is "clear", and the information requested has been presented more than adequately, and certainly not least, customer benefits have been documented accordingly. Create the "professional e-mail" habit! With practice this gets easier.
10. Willingness To Assist: When responding to E-Mail always try to be helpful without expecting anything in return. It won't take long before others will want to do business with you. You'll have developed their trust and respect. In fact, they will tell others about you too!!
11. Subject: Make your SUBJECT header count. It needs to be sharp, active, and benefit-laden. Busy people are quick to use their delete key. The SUBJECT field has the same power as an advertising "headline". Write a variety of "Subject" lines, pick one, and then polish it some more. Don't use cutesy or misleading headers.
8. Replying To An E-Mail:
EASY! You click "reply", write your reply, send it, go play. Whatever works for you and the recipient. Do, “quote” the “text” you are responding to. It will assist the receiver to discern more easily what your comments are related to. For wrapping “quotes” in a manner that sets them apart (" >" ) seems to be a "standard" now
9. Business E-Mail:
Start with your business objective, define a compelling offer, and deliver a response-driven, relevant message. Remember the spam filters are always watching.
Examples: Thumbs Down
- "How To Make BIG, BIG Money At Home!!"
- "$90,000 In 90 Days!!!!!"
“Home business makes you $1000’s

MLM CLASSROOM
3 - E-Mail Leads & Organization Skills
Once you begin to market online if you're not organized, it could turn into a big nightmare. You must learn how to organize your incoming E-mail. You'll want to know who has contacted you, how they found you, and store them so they are easily accessible.
Auto Filing:
Some online services offer unique facilities, which enable you to predefine characteristics to be automatically filed into certain folders that you can setup.
For example, let's say you have a classified ad posted in several places that instructs viewers to click on a link that says:
mailto:webpilot@freeautobot?subject=PensbyBob (Not active)
When someone sends an E-Mail to the above, you will get an E-Mail with the subject line of "Pens by Bob." If you have your E-Mail client configured right, all E-Mail with that subject line will go directly into one folder without any interaction on your part!
You can also have a different E-Mail address for more than one business offering you may be promoting. Your E-Mail client can automatically sort the incoming mail by the unique E-Mail address for each.
Outlook Express:
Select: Tools
Select: Inbox Assistant
Select: Add
Example:
Click (Right):
Select: Inbox at the left of your screen where all the folders are lined up.
Select: New Folder,
You can create your new folders as you set up the filter instead of having to create them before you start the process. You cannot do this with NetScape (See below)
Type: WebPilot Training Forum,
Click: OK
Incoming Mail: (Bottom of Screen)
Click: Move To
Click: Folder
Click: Inbox Folder
Click: WebPilot Training Forum
Click: OK
This will automatically file every MLM E-Mail that comes in for that address.
Repeat these steps for each E-Mail account you have. There are many uses for this feature. Setup as many folders as you feel you need. Drag and drop your existing e-mails into their appropriate folder.
Netscape Messenger:
Select: Edit
Select: Message Filters
Select: New
Type: Filter Name
Unless you are setting up multiple commands for this filter, just use "Match Any of the Following".
Setup: Filtering Criteria (Drop Down Menu),
Select: Move To Folder
Click: More To Add as required.
AOL:
The most obvious filter they have is you can have up to seven (7) screen names per account and you can switch back and forth while still signed on line. Starting with the 6.0 release you can add folders as you go along, and easily assign E-Mail to the folder of choice when you click at the bottom of your E-Mail "Save To Filing Cabinet". Your menu of folders is made available at this time and you just click the appropriate folder.

MLM CLASSROOM 4 - Signature Files (Sig file) - Important!
These are very important 3-6 lines following your name in your e-mail at the very end (Closing). It's here you tell the world who you are and what you're doing, and the benefit to your target market. It is a universally accepted form of letting everyone know what you market online and where your site is. A Signature file (Sig file) plays an integral role of your message, the information a person needs to reach you if the "Reply To:" function fails for some reason, or if the "From:" address is not included. The mail handler just looks for the file by name, and attaches it to your out-going E-mail messages as an option.
Use it on all of your outgoing E-mail, posting questions or answering someone's question in a discussion group / forum. Include your website URL and/or E-Mail address. Your E-Mail address is particularly important if you're posting to mailing lists or newsgroups. Use two Enter Key strokes after your name, then enter your "Sig file" information on the next horizontal line. You may want to separate with equal ("=") signs to create a semblance of a divider. Test your links, and proofread.
<<ACU Side Bar>> Always make sure you know the rules of a given mailing list or newsgroup before including your Sig file.]

5 - Email Discussion List Resources
Want to meet new prospects and spread the word? A resource people forget about is email discussion lists. MAKE SURE that you have your signature file on every email you sent to the list. You will be surprised at how many people will click on your links to your website. Join an Email discussion list. What are your interests? Art, antiques, boating, cars, computers, cooking, crafts, boats, hiking, jogging, law, motorcycles, parenting, pets, photography, quilting, skiing, sports, etc.
See: ACU Boards, Discussion Groups & Forum Information
Join as many lists as you can reasonably maintain a presence. Remember, the more you join, the more potential exposure you will have for your signature tag. For best results you will need to have something to say almost everyday in as many of them as you can comfortably do.
Ground Rules:
1. Be respectful and write intelligently.
2. Be of assistance to others when you have the knowledge, and experience. You're objective is to get viewer's to read to the end of your post including your signature line as well.
3. Use http:// in your URL's
4. Do not use more than 62 characters per line.
5. Send yourself a few messages to make sure your signature tag looks the way you want it to!!
Your results from this avenue of online marketing will largely depend on.
a) How big the list is, and
b) How good your 'Sig' tag is!
It's a numbers game. The more posts you have out there the more people will be led to your site and the more money you will make.
Discussion lists are where much of your action will come from. Some of these lists have 1000's of readers who talk about everything from making money to building web sites.

6 - E-Mail Hyper Links / HTML
You don’t need to know anything about HTML anymore; Web programming language, to use its power in your E-Mail. To allow the most flexibility, E-Mail programs use the same general-purpose Internet tool as Web pages to liven up mere text: Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). HTML lets you add formatting such as colors, different font sizes, centering, indentations, pictures, and even hyperlinks. Almost 90% of people on the Internet can now receive HTML email with graphics in it. Remember that RED can get you in trouble with the spam filters
Eudora 4.1 and Netscape Messenger, users simply use the toolbar above the message window to add these effects. The HTML code goes into the message behind the scenes, so you notice only the results. . Eudora sends a plain-text version and an HTML version attached to the same message. Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express users can visit the Format pull-down menu in any new message window, choose Rich Text (HTML) rather than plain text, and begin to use the formatting toolbar near the top of the screen.
The World Wide Web turns into more of a multimedia party each day. It is so full of graphics, sounds, and streaming videos however, a majority of E-Mail sent still looks stodgy. Surely a happy medium must exist. In fact, most E-Mail programs (or clients) available today have the power to energize E-mail. The features aren’t enough to compete with the animation-obsessed Web, but they’re enough to keep things interesting. Annoyed users look for ways to tone things down.
HTML E-Mail Directory
http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt6/email-client-summary.htm
HTML E-Mail Capability of E-Mail Client Programs. A brief table evaluating the HTML capability of various E-Mail client programs used by your subscribers and E-Mail list members. From this you can determine how well your HTML E-Mail is being read.
Examples:
a.) Type: mailto:
This makes a link (mailto:webpilot1@aol.com). Type your E-Mail address in this format when you place an ad or send a reply. Make it easy for your readers to reply. It has an effect on the number of responses you will receive.
b.) Type: mailto:webpilotlog@yahoo.com?subject=ezine (Not active) This setup is for replies about a specific subject. The suffix (?subject=) must be added.
c.) Type: mailto:webpilotlog@yahoo.com?subject=PENS_BY_BOB (Not active)
If you want to use more than one word, connect them with an underscore, (hold "shift" key, hit "underscore" _ )
When you put the subject in your link, you improve responses. Very few people want to take the time to type in a subject. This also assists you tracking your ads, and E-Mail sorting.
d.) Type: http://
http:// before the "www." will also generate a hyperlink making it easier for your recipients to go to your website... results in more hits.
e.) Test Your E-Mail
Send a test E-Mail to yourself. Make sure all links are typed correctly and working.
Send Later:
Wise people at the E-mail software companies have included a "Send Later" option on most, if not all, E-Mail programs. It's a good option.
We suggest you write your “marketing” e-letter save it in “Send Later”, walk away then come back and edit again. Save again in “Save Later”. Do a test run on some of your supportive friends / associates. When you’re satisfied. SEND!
Also, should the occasion arise when you get ready to send a really nasty letter, pull out your favorite pen, let ‘er rip on paper, stuff it in an envelope, slap on a stamp, and walk to a mailbox at least two blocks away. And then if you still need to, hope for a compassionate mailman!

7 - Free "Dump" or "Junk" E-Mail Accounts
A Dump E-Mail Account is a separate E-Mail address from what you normally use, and for the primary purposes of research, getting freebie and placing Ads. If you get a lot of responses to the ads you need a way to track and sort them without plugging up your private email box.
Create one or more MLM Junk / Dump E-Mail accounts. This is a necessary step when it comes to setting up your new business online, and needs to be done BEFORE you begin working the Internet/Web!! In fact, you'll want to setup more than one "Dump Account" if you plan on placing multiple ads. It can assist with tracking response to more than one ad "copy", or response from a particular location.
Example:
1. Open a YAHOO E-Mail account (YOU@yahoo.com)
2. Go to Yahoo Classifieds
3. Fill out the Yahoo Ad form. (Name, Address, Yahoo E-Mail Address) and the ad to be submitted.
A confirmation E-Mail will be in your Yahoo E-Mail box thanking you for your posting. They now have your E-Mail address to send you future 'junk mail", and so does EVERYONE else!!
Setting up a "Dump E-Mail Account" means your regular E-Mail address will not be flooded with other advertiser's E-Mail and confirmations from others on the WWW (World Wide Web) that you have interacted with in some manner.
See Classroom 10 below for EASY (if you are not handy at setting up email accounts) FREE email accounts to use for "Dump" or "Junk" Email

MLM CLASSROOM 8 - E-Mail Forwarding Services
Forwarding in an easy and fast way is one of E-Mail 's best features. E-Mail has brought us many ways that make communicating easier. The ability to forward (just about) everything in a fast and easy way is one of the most used ways. Forwarding an E-Mail message means to send it on to other recipients. You can add your own comments and you can forward a message to many people at once.
To forward an E-Mail message, you will usually click the "forward" button or use an equivalent keyboard shortcut. This depends on the E-Mail software you use.
The subject of a forwarded message can be the original message's subject, preceded by "Fwd: ", but it can also be something (completely) different.
A forwarded message should probably begin with your introduction to whatever comes forwarded. You can also add your comments to the forwarded here (although these can also go elsewhere, we'll come back to later).
Find out how to do it right, how to format a forward, how to forward forwards and more.

11 - Bulk E-Mail NO SPAM! YOU WILL BE TRACKED DOWN LIKE A DOG AND YOUR ISP LOST AND YOUR COMPANY DAMAGED. OPT-IN PERMISSION EMAIL (MEANING YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO SEND EMAIL) IS THE ONLY VIABLE MEANS ON THE INTERNET! Can your business or organization send out 1,000’s of e-mails in one hour-per account...and more if needed? Utilizing some of the software / or services available today you can, but with great risk. You can do it yourself-with just "one touch" on your keyboard, or you can employ the services of a provider. Providers that will sent out email for you using your list are few and far between now because of spam issues! The name list you use must be absolutely all opt-in addresses purchased from a reliable source.
Remember that this section is only in here to show how to communicate with your downline and other warm contacts that you already know. Why? The hate about spam is high today and so many vigilante anti-spammers out there that if you do not send to a known list that knows you the following will likely occur:
Using the current software available today you can now merge data fields as well as automatically update address lists, expirations, and "sleepers." You can also: Segment targeted mailings - for people you have contact
with Customize welcome messages Include file attachments Conduct discreet e-mailbox discussion groups Maintain security of access You design and input your own e-mail campaign, customize and merge the content, and manipulate your own list databases. If you don't have the staff or the resources to do it, external online services can handle the entire process for you. They provide the technical muscle to get your messages out there, and usually guarantee expedient delivery.
Warning! One of the biggest scams on the Internet is selling bulk email names! They will guarantee they are double opt-in and perfectly safe. Fat chance! You end up being hunted down like a dog and kicked in the pocket book!

Direct E-Mail ~ This is a mild form of "Direct" E-Mail like the "E-zine" (newsletter) advertising for the purpose of bringing in qualified leads. The people mailed are those that have "requested" commercial E-Mail.
Email Address ~ Also called the Domain Address, or the User Name, it allows the transmission of messages from one computer to another. Each Email is a UNIQUE address. There should not be another one like it. All email can be tracked to its source.
E-Mail Link ~ In reference to marketing is normally one that is setup with an auto-responder, for subscribing to a newsletter, or additional information. Affiliates use these to place links in E-Mail to a Distributors/Company site that will direct users to specific products / services.
Opt - In Email ~ An email list that the person signs into giving the sender permission to send them email. Currently the best way of sending advertising on the web. See Permission E-Mail below.
Permission E-Mail ~ The most effective advertising medium available today. The old direct marketing approach of reaching a mass audience with the brute force of mass production and mass mailings is no longer effective. The new direct marketing approach is about customization and personalization, about trust and responsibility, and protecting privacy. It is about empowering the consumer.
Literally billions of E-Mail messages are sent each day -- billions!
According to eMarketer, 81 million Americans use e-mail at least occasionally. The average American sends or receives 26.4 e-mail messages a day. The total number of messages sent by US Internet users is 2.1 billion, eMarketer reports. That means the remaining 7.3 billion messages are commercial e-mail messages, and eMarketer estimates 96 percent of these are Spam. Thanks to commercial messages, the average US e-mailer receives twice as many e-mails as he or she sends. Along these same lines, research done last year by the
Pew Research Center found that 88 percent of Internet users are frustrated by unwanted junk email.
“Newbies” take their initial online plunge for a variety of reasons. Access to great research materials, games, sports, and news often are cited as common motivators. What is the number one reason that newbies are ready, willing, and able to tackle cyberspace? E-Mail ! The ability to send and receive E-Mail is hands-down the most appreciated and utilized component of the Internet.
E-mail is revolutionizing the way we communicate today. For volume, speed, reliability, and cost, e-mail has become the obvious choice for one-on-one, customized marketing and customer service. So, what we are going to cover here in relation to E-Mail are habits you will need to develop if you're ever to "master" online E-Mail marketing. In other words…
“BEYOND E-Mail BASICS”.
We get literally thousands of E-Mail a month from friends, family, and business associates. AND... most of the E-Mail received reflects the thousands of missed opportunities to "sell" simply because they do not go
"Beyond E-Mail Basics!!
First you must spell and punctuate correctly. Why? You're establishing a relationship online and it's part of the "trust" equation. Take note of your own impressions / perceptions when you receive an E-Mail fraught with poor spelling and punctuation.
